Environmental - The Green Cable

TWO ELEMENTS. ZERO WASTE.

The ONLY environmentally friendly fire-performance cable.
MICC cable is a NON-AGEING product, and does not use any plastics to aid fire performance. Our bare MICC cable option consists of just two materials. Copper & Magnesium Oxide. Neither will burn, both elements are inorganic and non-carcinogenic. This results in no added smoke or toxins in a fire situation - creating no harm towards the natural environment. The copper used in our cables is 100% recyclable. Our bare MICC cable can work continuously up to 250C and survives over 3 hours in temperatures over 930C.
In comparison to other types of cable:
- Polymeric or LSZH fire performance cable starts to degrade at just 90°. By 180° the cable sheath has melted away.
- Steel Wired Armour cable (SWA) requires multiple layers of insulation and protective plastic sheathing combined with braided steel in order to provide protection for the conductive cores.
The majority of cable choices on the market require plastics or polymers to protect the conductors; all except one… Mineral Insulated Copper Clad (MICC) Cable can withstand some of the harshest environments on earth, and yet it provides the most environmentally friendly cable system. The MICC system offer designers, engineers, and installers the chance to reduce the overall environmental impact of a project, as well as reduce installation time and reduce the space required for cable systems.
When fire performance is required, MICC cable exceeds all British Standards including BS 50200 (Ph120) ENHANCED, BS 8434-2, BS 8519 & BS 8491 CAT 3 Power. If suitable for your environmental conditions, a bare MICC cable is likely to be the ONLY Fire performance cable that would meet Cat Aca under CPR legislation due to its zero combustible materials. This gives total peace of mind when choosing a fire performance cable.

Environmental Impact of PVC & LSZH Polymeric cables
Low smoke does not mean no smoke!
The smoke produced by polymeric cables reduced visibility by around 60%! This smoke is flammable and harmful to both the environment and humans.

Polymeric/PVC/plastics and LSZH (low smoke zero halogen) materials take up a huge part of landfills and you can see by the image on the left just how much SWA cables incorporate plastic per one meter!
Bare MICC Cables use zero plastics & operate continuously up to 250C and in excess of 930C for over 3 hours.

Landfill Issues
Historically, the use of plastics by cable manufacturers has been up to 1.23 million tons (Swerea IVF Report, 13003). The average scrap just from manufacturing was 5%, not even accounting for when the cables are replaced. Plastic was a low priced commodity and not thought to be recycled, with probably 20% of the product going straight in to a landfill.
Although recycling efforts are changing, cables that contain artificial fire retardants are still extremely difficult to recycle. According to a report from RINA last year, 'there isn't a single company, in terms of recyclers, that process plastic containing BFR (Brominated Fire Retardants) from start to finish'. Recycling companies have to separate these plastics from others and it can be a long and expensive process to get these recycled properly, in full. For companies that do use PVC/LSZH fire performance cables, this can mean that they will potentially send tens of thousands of tons of unrecyclable plastic shred that contains fire retardants to warehouses taking up valuable space - an amount that will probably end up going to landfill!
MICC Key Facts:
- WMC use the purest form of raw materials suitable for most environments meaning our cables will not deteriorate and is a non-ageing product.
- MICC cable is totally inorganic and silicone free.
- Zero failures throughout the cables lifetime - meaning our cable has never had to be replaced and re-installed.
- Any cable that does get damaged can be recycled and made into the next line of cable.
- ZERO smoke emission.
- ZERO combustible materials.
- ZERO halogens.
- ZERO acidic gases omitted.
- ZERO % waste sent to landfill.
- ZERO plastics - making MICC cable the greenest cable on the planet.

WMC Warranty & Returns Policy
For over 30 years WMC have manufactured in the UK, more than 170 million meters of MICC produced with ZERO failures in the field. With this impeccable record you can have complete confidence in our 30 year warranty cable system. Furthermore, any cable that does need replacing can be returned to our facility and recycled into a new line of cable!
After 20 years, PVC / LSZH cables would have been replaced at least once due to the breakdown in the polymers, all this plastic is likely to end up in landfills as non-recyclable waste.
MICC cable has an incredible life-span. Our cable continues to perform in excess of 30 years, in fact our sales team often take calls of MICC cables that have been installed for over 60 years that only need replacement accessories after the equipment it’s been powering becomes obsolete.
This sustainability of our MICC cable is uncompromised by any other cable system for environmental and operating solutions.
