MICC cable offers exceptional fire performance to protect 18th century country house, Radbourne Hall

Project Overview

Dating back to the 18th century, Radbourne Hall is one of Derbyshire's most distinguished Georgian country houses. As part of an extensive 3-year refurbishment programme in 2018, the restoration project team sought a wiring system capable of protecting the historic building while delivering reliable performance for decades to come.

To support the refurbishment, Wrexham Mineral Cables supplied more than 6,500 metres of black LSZH-sheathed Mineral Insulated Copper Clad (MICC) cable for installation throughout the property, helping create a future-proof electrical infrastructure sympathetic to the character of the building.

Challenge

The refurbishment team required a cable system that could provide exceptional fire performance while supporting the long-term preservation of a historic estate.

As a building that welcomes visitors and contains valuable heritage features, reliability was a key consideration. The project also focused on sustainability and reducing future maintenance requirements, ensuring that investment made today would continue to deliver value for decades.

The building itself presented additional installation challenges. Like many historic properties, Radbourne Hall was not originally designed to accommodate modern electrical services, with limited working space and narrow cable routes throughout the structure.

Solution

MICC had already been used successfully in parts of the property, providing proven fire protection where reliability was essential. Following its performance, the refurbishment team selected MICC as the complete wiring system throughout the building.

Project Manager Mark Williamson remarked:

"MICC had been installed in parts (of the property) previously due to its unbelievable fire performance. However, this project was looking towards sustainability and reduced maintenance costs in the future. For this reason, MICC was chosen again but this time as the complete wiring system throughout the building."

Beyond its fire-resistant properties, MICC was selected for its exceptional longevity. Unlike polymeric cable systems, MICC does not degrade with age, making it particularly well suited to historic buildings and infrastructure where minimising future disruption is a priority.

To support installation within the hall's restricted spaces, WMC also supplied a bespoke drum solution for the 4mm² cable, helping installers work efficiently within narrow ducts and confined areas.
